. >> i am john sasaki. breaking news out of southern california. a tour bus over turned on a freeway. the bus over turned at 10:00 a.m. on the 210. there are at least 50 people injured. five of them were seriously hurt. the rest have minor injuries. the bus was heading to a casino in highland. happening now a bomb threat at the santa clara county superior court administration building. the building is still evacuated. officials say no courtrooms have effected. an investigation into the death of one of san francisco's former top police officials. ktvu channel 2 news confirmed he killed himself last night.

there is no word on how he committed suicide. he was with the department for 32 years. . right now sex offenders are the target of a sweep. ktvu's janine de la vega joins us live from san jose where police are trying to take hundreds of sex offenders into custody to make the streets safer. >> reporter: this is a concern for authorities because we are very close to a school. this task force is focusing on a homeless encampment here. they are searching for transiates who are sex offenders who haven't registered. the task force, 9 law enforcement officers is conducting a two day sweep. there are 535 sex offenders in the county who are registered

as transients. they are required to register where they are living every 30 days. authorities are questioning the homeless if they live there if they have seen certain sex offenders. >> it is extremely challenging. you can see remnants of clothing, garbage that is disposed of and they are hard to find. we -- you know, they they have look outs. they have a way of notifying people down here law enforcement officers on the way. >> reporter: the task force made 8 arrests. and one was a parolee but no sex offenders have not been arrested yet. the five that have been questioned have been in compliance. some sex offenders don't want to be found so that is another challenge law enforcement is facing. back out here to a live picture where you can see a sheriff's

van and authorities here have arrested a homeless man. we found out he was wanted but again, not a sex offender. just somebody they questioned. that is something else, they are finding people who have been wanted for other crimes, some drug related and they are able to arrest them while they are doing this sweep. the sweep continues till tomorrow. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. operation ceasefire led to a major sweep in oakland. officers focused on gangs. they arrested four males and a female. some were juveniles. >> operation ceasefire is focused on the most violent and active gangs in oakland. we believe they are responsible for the most crime and this

is expected to survive. police say three suspects were seen leaving in a silver vehicle. accused of kidnapping sierra lamar. he is expected to appear in court this afternoon. officials say attorneys are expected to request a continuous. in march of last year she was 15 years old when she disappeared. her body has never been found. new at noon san francisco city attorney is sueing to keep san francisco city college from being shut down. >> improper evaluation processes the commission's action constitute illegal business practices. >> last month the commission

clouds over the fire that lead to a massive burn. >> today i told the crews we will see more of what we saw yesterday. >> reporter: the fire is so large it creates its own weather. plumes seen here on a radar -- >> this reached 23,000 feet high. -- 43,000 feet high. >> the plume generated rain, lightning and gusting winds. >> you can think of it as a boiling pot of water. in the morning we had a lid over the pot, as the day went on the column stood up. >> reporter: they are constantly tracking the changing weather that is so critical to firefighter safety and the behavior of the fire. >> weather conditions can drive how a fire behaves. we have seen how weather

impacted this fire in our case, pretty impressive. >> reporter: back out here live, you can see one of the concerns of the fire crews the cloud already building over the fire. a clear indication the fire is heating up. already picking up an hour ahead as to when they expected to see this activity. that is where they had the blow out yesterday. over here on this side of the fire this is a big concern. the smoke through the trees. that is the close to say the pine mountain lake area. there are homes long there. if the fire jumps the river it will make a fast run towards the home and it will be difficult to protect the homes. that is their concern right now, protecting property on that end of the fire and i can tell you this fire has been -- just been a monster. you heard them stay, 37,000 acres in one day, not something they see every day. something they are preparing

for today. >> thank you very much. ktvu's mark tamayo is here with a look at the conditions firefighters are facing as they battle today. >> temperatures have been warming up as you would expect and things drying out. the fire behavior could pick up over the next few hours. as the satellite shows you, we have activity to the east of all this fire. right now they have partly cloudy skies and all that haze and the smoke in the area, most of this isn't reaching the ground in terms of significant rainfall. rainfall will not help today. the groveland fire. one key challenge for the fire crews will be the terrain. especially the river canyons. that fire blowing up in those areas. as a result very -- can't even get to that area. as far as the current weather conditions, temperatures right now in the 80s. 82-84 degrees. winds out of the southeast 8 miles per hour.

and humidity levels coming down. that continues over the next few hours. coming up, the thunderstorm threat has moved out but we have more fog to talk about, we will have that in a few minutes. we will continue to monitor the rim fire. we will have live reports tonight at 5:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. and the latest on www.ktvu.com. the rim fire is one of a dozen major wildfires burning around the state right now. more than 8,000 firefighters are across california. it helped the threat of lightning sparked firedize creased but gusty winds continue to pose a major challenge for crews. an hour ago the all clear was given at a office building as a powder triggered evacuations. she said it made her lips and fingers burn. that worker did not report the problem till this morning. the building was evacuated at

8:30 a.m. and hazmat to the letter to a lab. it turned out to be harmless. bart's board of directsers holding meetings today. talks between bart and unions have been on hold since august 11 11. bart and the unions are far part on pay, healthcare and pension costs. construction on the new span of the bay bridge is almost done. ktvu channel 2 news will get a tour of the bike path. they are scheduled to open with the rest of the span on september 3. the remaining portion won't be finished till the summer of 2015. you can find more on

kidnapping victim hannah anderson gave her first interview about her abduction. hannah anderson described herself as a survivor and thanked her supporters and reveals new information about her relationship with james lee dimaggio. >> reporter: hannah anderson spoke to nbc for the first time about her kidnapping and rescue. >> in the beginning i was a victim but now knowing everyone is helping me i am a survivor. >> reporter: hannah anderson was kidnapped by james lee dimaggio. mese would find the bodies of her mother and brother at his burned home. hannah anderson responded to questions about why she exchanged text messages with james lee dimaggio. >> they were text because he was picking me up from cheer camp and he didn't know the address so i had to tell him

the address and tell him i would be in the gym. >> reporter: she also explained why she sent him letters. >> letters were from a year ago when me and my mom weren't getting along. we would talk about how to deal with it. i would tell him how i felt about it and he would help me through it. they were just to help me through tough times. >> reporter: a week after the kidnapping horse back riders in the wilderness spotted them. james lee dimaggio was killed by fbi agents and hannah anderson returned. >> i wanted to thank the horseman and the amber alert and the sheriff and the fbi with everyone that put in their time oo mind me -- to find me. president obama went back to school today on a two day

are taking extra precautions to guard against a robber with a gun. >> i have never seen anything like this happen. i have never felt not safe here. >> reporter: now she locking her door following four robberies within a week. she is located at the clayton valley shopping center. >> next door got robbed at 10:00 a.m. in the morning which is usual. >> reporter: just last saturday the sally's next to her salon was robbed and so was the yogurt shack. then robber struck again. the robbery happened around 6:00 p.m. last night. two hours before closing time. it is unclear if there were customers in the store at the time but at this point we have no reports of injuries. after pet food express the robber moved down the road to the ups store in the vineyard shopping center. the robber, the same man,

white, with a bushy mustache and apeers to be homeless. shoppers say he should stand out. >> that would be out of the ordinary. >> we don't have a lot of homeless that hang out here. >> reporter: they are trying to determine if it is the same man who committed all four robberies and if you see someone similar call police. >> definitely keep an eye out. >> reporter: ktvu channel 2 news. a over turned big rig on interstate 780. the crash happened before 10:00 a.m. this morning. no one was injured but it forced the closure of the on and off ramps at second street. a tow truck is on scene working to put the truck upright. cooler today across the bay area. probably noticed that with lots of low clouds and fog. stubborn patches this afternoon but beginning to break up. looking towards the golden gate

bridge. there is the over cast. towards the west. still a factor towards the shoreline. as far as the thunderstorm threat that moved out of thousand. you can see the activity right now up to the north. we just have the fog hugging the shoreline here. still a left over patches around the rim of the bay as well. temperatures not so hot out there. showing you 60s and 70s. livermore right now 72 degrees. san jose 66. san francisco 63. and napa upper 60s. 68 degrees. today patchy clouds near the coast. sun-cloud mix for everybody else. brief bump in the numbers for friday and the weekend, more fog and temperatures slide down for saturday and sunday. we have ben watching this area of low pressure since monday. stalled off shore. this was the thunderstorm threat, the producer. you can see it is scooting to the north and east. as a result no thunderstorm
